ADVENTURE AUTHOR LANDS IN CHICKEN SOUP
On Courage and Adventure...
Deborah Morris has been writing about real kids' rescue and survival adventures for years, being most widely known for her Real Kids Real Adventures book series and Emmy-nominated TV series. Still, she was surprised when the publisher of the popular Chicken Soup series contacted her about using one of her Real Kids ocean survival stories, "Lost in the Atlantic", in their newest book project: Chicken Soup for the Ocean Lover's Soul.
"My first reaction was to laugh and say, 'You're kidding, right?'" says Deborah. "The story they wanted was about a Florida teenager who was flying home with his dad from a fishing trip in the Bahamas when their small plane crashed into the Atlantic, leaving them adrift in shark-infested waters for days without a life raft, water, or anything else useful. I couldn't imagine how that story would appeal to an 'Ocean Lover'."
It soon became clear, however, that the publishers were serious. The appeal was the story's portrayal of how the ocean ordeal drew the father and son together, a positive theme that fit in well with the Chicken Soup tradition. Morris agreed to let a shortened version of the story which appears in its entirety in Real Kids Real Adventures Book 7, be included in the new Soup book.
"I've actually written for HCI [the publishers of the Chicken Soup series] before... Teens 911: Snowbound is an HCI book. I've been to their offices in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and met just about everyone in the company. I have to say that it's an impressive place in the sense that they practice, corporately, what they preach. I've never seen so many people happy and excited about their work!"
Chicken Soup for the Ocean Lover's Soul will be released in trade paperback, and will sell for $12.95.
